Preparing Your Home/Property For Going Out Of Town

Your vacation and holiday trips should be a worry-free and relaxing time. But before heading out, it’s also a good idea to take necessary preparations to ensure your home is safe and secure. In doing this, you’ll be able to fully relax on your vacation or holiday trip and have one less thing to worry about. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to ensure that your home will be ready for your trip away.

Make your house look lived-in

Leaving an empty house is like leaving an open invitation for burglars. Keep your home looking occupied by:

  • Park the car inside the garage, if you have one
  • Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway occasionally, so there’s activity at your house
  • Put at least one light in your home on a timer
  • Make sure your lawn stays trimmed
  • Stop the newspaper and mail – or ask a trusted neighbor to pick them up for you
  • Install an outdoor motion-sensor floodlight

Necessary plumbing and electrical precautions

Keeping appliances running while your away is a needless expense that could also lead to costly problems. Avoid the possibility of any appliances breaking down while you’re away by:

  • Turn off any water valves to the washing machine, dishwasher, and all sinks
  • Unplug small electronic devices and appliances
  • Set your thermostat to a temperature that reflects closer to the outside temps (warmer in the summer, cooler in the winter)
  • Leave your kitchen and fridge clean
  • Consider leaving room doors open so that air can circulate throughout your home

General home preparations

Here are some other things to consider doing before leaving for vacation and holidays:

  • Make sure your smoke detectors are working properly
  • Alert your alarm company, if you have one
  • Leave your emergency contact information with your neighbor
  • Notify your credit card company that you’ll be out of town
