The past, present, and future of Lubbock’s famous Pioneer Building.
It’s a historic landmark.
The Pioneer Building, formerly known as Hotel Lubbock, is an 11-story building marking almost a century of Lubbock history and the ebb and flow the West Texas economy. Constructed during the roaring twenties by architectural firm Sanguinet-Statts & Hedrick to provide housing during a boom time, the Lubbock Hotel existed as the premier hotel in the area. It opened its doors in 1926, and for more than 30 years an elegant ballroom played host to every major social and civic event of the day. The full history of The Pioneer Building is fascinating, with highs and lows.
Today, the Renaissance Revival architecture style Pioneer Building is one of a handful of remaining early pre-World War II major buildings left in the city.
It’s been redeveloped and revitalized.
After a period of decline in the 80s and 90s coinciding with the city residents mass migration from downtown to southwest Lubbock, McDougal Cos. Ltd. bought The Pioneer Building in 2005 with plans to restore the structure to its former glory.
In 2012, the restoration was complete. Now many West Texas professionals call The Pioneer Condos home, and The Pioneer Building is a center for downtown life. The restoration of the historic landmark has kicked off the larger Downtown Lubbock Land Redevelopment Project.
There are tasty eats at The West Table.
Inside the main lobby of the revitalized Pioneer Building is famed eatery The West Table. As the premier restaurant for seasonal upscale dining in West Texas, The West Table is known as one of the best restaurants in Lubbock. Their menu changes daily, but patrons can always count on gourmet dishes with high-quality ingredients and some West Texas flavor.
The Coffee Shop is perfect.
Also inside the historic downtown structure is The Coffee Shop, which is operated by the same owners as The West Table. Known as one of the best coffee shops in Lubbock, patrons of The Coffee Shop love the artisan coffee brews and delectable pastries. Also, the shop just has a quite charming vibe.
